Losing a dog is always very heartbreaking for me, but this one really hurt deeply. I had a special bond with Gemma that far surpassed any connection I've ever had with a dog in all my years/decades keeping dogs. Although I shared 8 years of my life with her, for which I am immensely grateful, she was taken from me far too soon. What made it worse is it was completely avoidable, and I wasn't even there to do anything about it. She was a part of me... my little soul mate. Burying her was one of the hardest things i've ever had to do.

Hugo Boss was our little miracle boy. Gemma's brother, we bought him and Gemma at the same time, as Hugo looked in poor condition and we felt sorry for him. Not long after we got him he nearly died twice, but amazingly the vet hospital got him through. The bad news was he had hydrocephalus and the prognosis wasn't good - 12 to 18 months tops. But they didn't know that Hugo was a fighter! He was 'different' to our other dogs (some might say he was autistic); for the longest time it was difficult to get any reaction or emotion from him. Wagging his tail or getting excited about food treats just wasn't in him, and for years he didn't respond to his name. Gradually though, he started to blossom. His fur grew thicker, he would respond to his name, come when called, and even got excited about various treats. He was never 'normal', but he had a huge character, an enormous soul, and never stopped making us smile. How he made it to 10 years of age I'll never know, but the strange thing was having seen him survive for so long, it kind of felt like he would go on indefinitely. Sadly that wasn't the case. RIP beautiful little boy.
